24 Aug 2023

Ragi Momos, a nutritious twist on the classic, bring together the flavors of momos and the health benefits of ragi. In this blog post, we're embarking on a culinary journey to explore the art of crafting Ragi Momos that are as wholesome as they are delectable.

v What are Ragi Momos?

Ragi Momos are a fusion of the beloved momo concept with the nutritional richness of ragi. These dumplings take a leap from the traditional by using a ragi-based dough and are typically filled with a variety of delicious fillings.

v Recipe: Ragi Momos with Vegetable Filling

Ø Ingredients You'll Need:

For the Dough:

- 1 cup ragi flour

- 1/2 cup wheat flour (for binding)

- Water as needed

- Salt to taste

For the Filling:

- 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans, corn), finely chopped

- 1 onion, finely chopped

- 2 cloves of garlic, minced

- 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger

- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 1 tablespoon oil

- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish

Ø Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Prepare the Dough:

   - In a mixing bowl, combine the ragi flour, wheat flour, and a pinch of salt.

   - Gradually add water and knead to form a soft, pliable dough. Cover and set aside.

2. Create the Filling:

   - Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.

   - Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté until aromatic.

3. Add Vegetables:

   - Toss in the chopped mixed vegetables and sauté until they are slightly cooked yet still crisp.

4. Spice it Up:

   - Incorporate turmeric powder, garam masala, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the vegetables with the spices. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

5. Shape and Fill the Momos:

   - Divide the dough into small equal-sized portions and roll them into balls.

   - Roll out each ball into a thin circle, similar to a chapati, using a rolling pin.

   - Place a spoonful of the vegetable filling in the center of each circle.

6. Seal and Shape:

   - Carefully fold and seal the edges of the circle to create a half-moon shape. You can experiment with various momo shapes if you like.

7. Steam the Momos:

   - Arrange the momos in a greased steamer and steam them for about 10-12 minutes or until the dough is cooked and the momos are firm.

8. Serve and Garnish:

   - Once the momos are steamed, remove them from the steamer.

   - Garnish the Ragi Momos with chopped fresh coriander leaves.

Ø Conclusion: The Joy of Nourishing Momos

Ragi Momos are a celebration of flavor, innovation, and nutrition. By integrating the wholesome richness of ragi into the momo experience, we create a dish that's not only delicious but also nurturing.
